Commander Charles “Chuck” Mawer

Charles “Chuck” Mawer was born in 1917 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. A year after graduating high school he joined the Naval Reserve as a midshipman and continued to serve through to the end of the Second World War.  On D-Day Mawer was a gunnery officer aboard the HMCS Haida—a Tribal-class destroyer that saw battle in the English Channel and escorted troop convoys to France on D-Day.

Upon his retirement from the Navy, Chuck held the rank of Commander and had received the Distinguished Service Cross for his actions overseas.  He rejoined Richardson Graves at the end of the war and later worked at a variety of companies, finally ending up at McLeod Young Weir, where he remained until 1974, serving as the manager of the Calgary office and Alberta Director.

In 1974, Commander Mawer started Mawer & Associates. His mantra—“Do the right thing”—differentiated his new firm from the others. He believed that more than anything else, if the firm always did the right thing by clients, success would follow.

Chuck married Mary “Nibs” Graveley in 1940, and together they raised four children: Stephanie, Pamela, Peter and Martha.  They were married for 62 years until Mary’s passing in 2002. Chuck retired in 1995 at the age of 78. He passed away on October 29, 2006.  Both Chuck and Mary are survived by their four children and their spouses, ten grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
