John Pattison played a pivotal role in the Battle of Vimy Ridge. On the second day of fighting the enemy still held Hill 145 (site of the present day Vimy monument) and Pattison, “with utter disregard of his own safety”, was able to take out a strongly defended machine-gun post using his bombs and bayonet.
The entire ridge was in Canadian hands shortly thereafter.
